It’s All About Relationships
Family therapy professor and counselor; diversity and multicultural coach; international lecturer; author; TV personality—Nixon wears many hats, and as different as they all are, they each hang on the same rack– and that rack is relationships. “Everything,” she argues, “is about relationships… it’s just a matter of context.” Nixon believes that relationships are the cornerstone for how we become who we are, and how we move in the world. She says, “Regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, education, occupation, or class, we are always making choices based on the people and things we are connected to. We are always interacting– relating –with someone or something either consciously or unconsciously.”

About Dr. Nixon
Debra Ann Nixon is a graduate professor at the largest and most diverse private university in the southeast United States. An impassioned scholar, counselor, lecturer and writer, Nixon has made her mark as a champion of inclusion and community. Her distinct voice on the subject of diversity has a global reach, as she has taught courses at Uganda Christian University in Mukono, Uganda and is the author of more than a half dozen books. Nixon is the organizer of a grassroots campus-wide inclusion movement, and founder of Liberation Outreach International. With more than 30 years of experience in community and corporate interfacing, Nixon has inspired thousands with her extraordinary approach to the issues of diversity.
A product of a Dallas, Texas inner city community, Nixon has aptly distinguished herself as a fearless and innovative leader in the area of community building and inclusion. Her claim to fame hails from her provocative approach to teaching diversity graduate students. Nixon’s work in the classroom inspired her to create and coordinate the “Do Something Different” (DSD) campus inclusion campaign at her university. The success of DSD lead to her own campus TV show, REAL TALK WITH DR. DEBRA NIXON. Most recently Nixon’s fresh approach landed her the role as the therapist on the Spring 2009 season of BET’s reality TV show COLLEGE HILL. She is credited with diffusing the discord within a diverse group of college students sharing living quarters. In addition, Nixon continues to demonstrate her understanding of inclusion and community through the mentoring program she established in Broward County for high school students with social and academic concerns.
